Prospect Heights Jail Plaquing & Al Packer 100 Doin’s
Brothers, the Hewgag Brays!
In 1905, Cañon City outlawed alcohol, leaving coal miners and mill workers high and dry. In response, Anton and Florijan Adamic, along with John Musick, founded the town of Prospect Heights solely to keep the spirits flowing. The only government building ever built was the jail, and now, in true Clamper fashion, we’re here to honor its history!

The Prospect Heights Jail, constructed in 1906, stands as the sole municipal building of the former town of Prospect Heights. Established to serve the local coal miners and mill workers, the town quickly became known for its numerous saloons, leading to the necessity of a jail to maintain order. The jail’s robust stone construction and its role in the community’s vibrant history make it a landmark worth commemorating. Notably, in 2003, the jail was added to the Colorado Register of Historic Places, underscoring its importance in the region’s heritage.
